Care through a screen
An online form is only part of the conversation.
The misconception
“An online form is the same thing as an assessment.”
The answer
With telehealth, the patient and clinician can be in different places, talking on video or exchanging information online. Ask how the assessment works.
FSMB is short for Federation of State Medical Boards. This group brings state medical boards together. Its suggested standards reject care based only on an unchanging form that misses needed information. As checked September 26, 2026, these are suggested standards that state boards can adopt. What is legally required depends on your state’s rules.
Trace this answerLook for a conversation that can develop
Ask how questions go both ways
Can the clinician ask for more detail? Can you ask about their answer? Find out how that exchange works before paying.
A form that changes with your answers and allows a clinician to follow up is different from a fixed form alone.
Ask whether you need to be online together
The FSMB guidance checked September 26, 2026 allows some first visits through messages rather than a live call.
The visit still needs to meet the expected level of medical care, and each state has its own rules.
Ask the service whether your state allows this kind of first visit and how the doctor will get enough information about your problem.
Say where you will be
Federal guidance checked September 26, 2026 ties the doctor’s permission to practise to the place where you are sitting for the appointment.
A home address and the place you are sitting during the appointment may be different.
Ask what would move the visit into a room
If you need tests or an examination, the doctor must provide or arrange them, including sending you to another health professional.
Ask where those steps would happen and who would explain the results.
Keep a route back to the clinician
Ask how a question gets back to the clinician after your appointment. Find out who covers their absence, and keep that detail with the plan.
